Brammo’s Empulse Delayed to 2012

Brammo’s Empulse Delayed to 2012According to Asphalt and Rubber, Brammo’s Empulse motorbike will now be delayed to 2012, citing CEO Craig Bramscher’s decision to integrate a certain new technology before launch.
The site speculates that this has something to do with the six-speed Integrated Electric Transmission (IET) that Brammo recently licensed from Italian firm S.M.R.E., and this technology’s already featured on the company’s Engage and Encite dirt bikes announced last week.
There’s also a rumor that Brammo didn’t reach its pre-order goal of 1,000 units.

Hammacher Schlemmer Introduces the Electric Comfort BicycleHammacher Schlemmer has introduced a new ebike, and has given it the snazzy name of the Electric Comfort Bicycle. (Yes, I’m being a wee bit ironic.)
This electric bicycle has been getting attention around the web lately, for its extended range and large, padded seat.
Nearly everything about the bike has been designed with rider relaxation in mind, including padded-wrapped handlebars, upright riding body design, and 26? balloon-tires for a smooth ride over uneven surfaces.

Zero Motorcycles Dominates at Minimoto SXZero Motorcycles celebrated victory this past weekend at the 2011 Geico AMA MiniMoto SX in Las Vegas.
On Friday, May 6, Zero set some of the fastest qualifying times among both gas and electric motorcycles. Quick from the start, they dominated the electric motorcycle heat race on production Zero MX dirt bikes.
During the race, Zero’s Blake Mitchell took first, followed by Jamie Lanza, Chris Green and Trevor Doniak. Consistently outpacing, out accelerating and out handling the other electric motorcycle competition, Zero showed the strength of their dirt bike line which has evolved to become faster and more robust over several generations.
The winner, Blake Mitchell, owns and trains on a Zero X which he purchased in 2008 so that he could gain a competitive edge by riding close to home without disturbing those living nearby.

If You’re In Santa Monica, Pedal or Not

If You’re In Santa Monica, Pedal or NotPedal or Not Inc. in Santa Monica offers local bicycle tours for people who might not want to pedal the whole way of a three hour tour.
The tour costs $59 and winds along the beach bike path from Santa Monica to the Venice canals. People who’ve taken these tours from Pedal or Not have posted plenty of reviews on the travel website TripAdvisor. But getting word out to tourists has been tough, owners Barb and Stephen Wittels said.
For example, they’ve tried to get local hotels to recommend the service to their guests, but concierges seem to persist in thinking of it as just another bicycle rental shop.

Give Some Thought To Ebike Usage
Give Some Thought To Ebike Usage
I recently read an article from Malaysia, in which the “call to introduce electric bicycles in the country [was] now being studied at a rather aggressive pace,” by the Malaysia Institute of Road Safety Research.
To that end, the MIROS had published a questionaire, and invited everyone to respond to it.
I thought, perhaps communities here in the US (as well as those around the world, of course) should launch a similiar scheme – see how much the inhabitants know about ebikes – or even bikes – for that matter – and see what can be done to popularize them.
The problem with many communities is of course that roads are too dangerous for bicycles. Motorists, even those who have no problem “sharing the roads” nevertheless do have to cope with bicyclists riding along narrow lanes with no bike shoulder, and should there be any obstructions in the road, that makes it even more dangerous.
Here’s the questionaire that people were invited to answer. See if you can adapt it to suit your needs.
PURPOSE: The aim of this public consultation is to obtain views, comments and feedback from the public on whether and how to regulate electric bicycles in Malaysia.
BACKGROUND: [Your organization] has been directed to study and make proposals on how to regulate the use of electric bicycles in the [community]. The possible use of electric bicycles [here] cuts across multiple sectors such as road safety, green technology, specification standards, the extent of regulation (for example registration, licensing, training, insurance and law enforcement) and socio-economic factors, to name a few. The outcome of this public consultation could have significant implications for consumers and industry.
1. According to your understanding:
A. What is a bicycle?
B. What is an electric bicycle?
C. How should we differentiate an electric bicycle from a motorcycle?
2. Should there be a clear definition of “electric bicycle” in the law?
A. If yes, why? (Please provide reasons for your views)
B. If no, why not? (Please provide reasons for your views)
3. Whether electric bicycles should be allowed in [your community]?
A. If yes, why? (Please provide reasons for your views)
B. If no, why not? (Please provide reasons for your views)
4. If electric bicycles are to be allowed in [your community]:
A. What type of electric bicycles should be permitted and what specification standards (for example, speed, battery type, lights etc) should be applicable? (Please provide the reasons and basis for your views)
B. Should any other aspects of the industry be regulated?
C. Should the use and operation of electric bicycles be regulated?
a. If yes:
i. what aspects of their use and operation should be regulated? (Please provide reasons for your views)
ii. to what extent should they be regulated? (Please provide reasons for your views)
iii. in what way should they be regulated? (Please provide reasons for your views)
b. If you think electric bicycles should not be regulated please also provide the basis for your views.
5. What are your views, if any, in respect of the following regarding electric bicycles:
A. Road safety in respect of:
a. The individual electric bicycle rider ( i.e. electric cyclist)
b. How the presence of the electric cyclist on the road might influence the safety of other road users; and
c. Bicycles being powered by electricity instead of human power
B. Environmental impact
C. Socio-economic issues
6. Are you a user of electric bicycles?
7. Are any of your family members an electric bicycle user?

Grace One Ready To Roll
The Grace One out of Germany has been on the drawing board for two years now, and it now looks…well, “kick ass” is the only way to describe it.
There’s a stacked proejctor headlamp in the aluminum housing in front of the handle bars, the integrated Li-ion batteries charge in abut an hour, and there’s a hub mounted motor in the rear wheel, giving you a top speed of up to 30 MPH.
The cost is a bit kick ass too, at 4,199 punds ($6,000).

The Los Angeles Police Department Will Use EBikes
Posted on 17 May 2011. Tags: bicycle retailer, currie, izip, LAPD, Larry Pizzi, police using ebikes
The Los Angeles Police Department Will Use EBikesLOS ANGELES, CA (BRAIN)—The Los Angeles Police Department’s Bicycle Coordination Unit has said that initial testing and evaluation of IZIP Express Police bicycles have been completed with favorable results. The department has decided to begin field-testing the electric bicycles at special events to further explore their viability under actual patrol conditions.
In May of 2010, Currie Technologies, the producer of the IZIP Express, supplied the LAPD Bicycle Coordination Unit with prototype models for initial testing. With input and feedback from officers, the electric bike’s components and design were further modified to ultimately become a special, purpose built, police edition model that could be added to LAPD’s arsenal of community policing tools.
On Wednesday May 11 Larry Pizzi, Currie’s president, presented two IZIP Express Police Edition electric bicycles to LAPD Deputy Chief, Terry S. Hara and Sergeant Matthew Bygum, Officer in Charge of the LAPD Bicycle Coordination Unit. The formal presentation was made at the Company’s IZIP Store, which is located at 609 Lincoln Boulevard in Venice, Los Angeles, California.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to support the LAPD and the City of Los Angeles with their embrace of light electric vehicles, recognizing their duty of care to the environment as well as the citizens of Los Angeles,” Pizzi said.

Talking Shop at Hollywood Electrics
Posted on 18 May 2011. Tags: ebikes, ecycles, electric motorcycles, Hollywood Electrics
Talking Shop at Hollywood ElectricsHollywood, CA — Harlan Flagg owns Hollywood Electrics, where he sells a full range of electric motorcycles, bicycles, and scooters and repairs them too. If it’s on 2 wheels and runs an electric motor, it’s for sale at Hollywood Electrics. Even the $17,000 Roehr was recently sold through that store.
Below are a couple of vidoes. In the first , Harlan tells how business is doing, and his thoughts on the current state of the electric motorcycle industry.
What’s really worth noting is that he cites lack of financing as the biggest hurdle to electric motorcycle sales. Because both his shop and the brands he carries are relatively new, banks are wary about offering financing through either of them.

Hero Honda to change its name
With its partnership with Honda over, Hero Honda is getting ready to change its name and thus its branding to reflect just that and take on the Honda, not only in India, but in some international markets as well.
As per news reports, Hero Honda has already applied to the Registrar of Companies for availability of the name Hero Moto, once it receives positive confirmation of the same, it will then have to seek shareholder approval, before it can actually change its name.
Of course the sad thing is (at least as far as internet is concerned), www.heromoto.com was registered earlier this year by a motorcyclist in US and is thus unavailable and its Indian counterpart i.e. heromoto.in was registered by an Indian (no doubt looking to make a quick buck), yesterday!
So it would be interesting to see, whether Hero Honda also changes its website URL by buying these domain names or goes for something entirely different.
Of course a much bigger worry for them would be the rebranding at home in India, where its entry level motorcycles are often just referred to as Honda!

Bajaj Motorcycles to cost more from 2011
Bajaj Auto is all set to raise the price of its motorcycles from January 2011, due to increasing cost of raw material.
Price hike would likely be Rs. 1000 across the range for all Bajaj Motorcycles and would be applicable from the 1st of January 2011.
Speaking to the media, Mr. S Sridhar, President Bajaj Auto (two-wheelers), said, “The continued rising cost of raw material inputs is the main cause for this increase. Despite the hike our models continue to offer superior value compared to competition, and hence we do not expect this price rise to affect our sales.’’
Hero Honda too is planning to raise the price of its two wheelers in India and other two wheeler manufacturers are expected to announce similar price hikes in the near future.

Stoner wins first race of the season
Casey Stoner managed to win the first race of the 2011 MotoGP season last night, with a huge 3.44 second lead over Lorenzo, who came in second!
However, the real disappointing show was in offering for Italian, Ducati and Rossi fans, as the doctor only managed finish the race 16.431 seconds behind Stoner, at 7th place and his team mate, Hayden, crossing the finish line 11 seconds later, at 9th place!
After the race, Rossi blamed his last season’s shoulder injury for the disappointing showing, “For sure we’re not here to get seventh-place finishes, but there are also positive things from this race, starting with the times, because we were lapping pretty quickly. I had a great start, and that was a nice feeling because the horsepower that this bike has really helps it to launch. Then I made a small error in the first turn, which is a shame because I got stuck behind Barbera for a few laps. Otherwise I would have been closer to Simoncelli and Dovizioso, since anyway there was a period when I lapped with them. I wouldn’t have beaten them though, because at the end of the race, I’m no longer able to ride like I have to. I’m not referring to the Ducati because even last year, after I hurt my shoulder, I had the same problems in the latter parts of the races, and since the two bikes are so different, it means that it’s really a matter of me not being physically right. It’s not just that. We also have to improve the bike because the others have clearly made a step forward since last year. Still, I learned a lot in this test and in this race, and we’ve already given very specific instructions about what must be done in the long term, in order to improve for the second half of the season for example. In the near term, on the other hand, we’ll work on the setup, we’ll keep gathering experience, and I’ll continue exercising and doing everything I can to recuperate physically.”
For the sake of Rossi’s fan (which I too am one) and MotoGP in general, we really hope Rossi recovers fast and well, so as to make the races, much more interesting than this one!

Motul 3000 4T Plus review
Recently I started using Motul 3000 4T Plus motorcycle engine oil in my motorcycle, as an alternative to Petronas Sprinta 4T 2000 engine oil, availability of which has become somewhat of an issue these days.
Biggest thing which impressed me about the Motul 3000 4T Plus, as soon as I saw the engine oil bottle was its specifications, which was a nice 15w50 API SM JASO MA2. Frankly speaking, this was the first time I saw 15w50 mineral engine oil, as this rating is normally found in semi-synthetic engine oils and thankfully I got a chance to test it in slightly cold climate of Himachal Pradesh and that too at a nice enough altitude of around 9000ft at Shoja, where my bike started in the morning at slight press of the self start button.
Apart from this, gear changes for the majority of the duration of the trip were quite smooth and even while riding in the hot plains of North India at 90+ kmph or while negotiating traffic snarls, engine as well as gear box remained relatively smooth and there was no sign of overheating.
Leading me to believe that this is a good replacement for the Petronas Sprinta 4T 2000 and for a price of Rs. 230 a liter, not really an expensive proposition either!
Of course one can also buy its more expensive counterpart, Motul 5100 4T, which is a semi-synthetic motorcycle engine oil and review of which would be posted soon, along with a comparison between the Motul 5100 and 3000.

Follow-up of Scooters India’s Disinvestment
Home-grown auto makers Atul Auto and Mahindra & Mahindra are gearing up to explore the possibility of acquiring Scooters India, after the government today decided to divest its entire stake in the sick firm.
While Rajkot-based Atul Auto today said it is willing to acquire the 95 per cent stake in Scooters India Ltd (SIL), Mahindra & Mahindra said it will examine the opportunity and will announce a final decision on the acquisition of SIL within the next 45 days.
“We are interested in acquiring a minimum of 51 per cent stake in SIL. If the government permits, we can go up to acquiring the entire 95 per cent stake of the firm,” Atul Auto Director Vijay Kedia told PTI. Asked about the valuation of SIL, Kedia declined to put any figure saying it will be possible only after conducting a diligence.
Reiterating the company’s interest in SIL, he said: “We had earlier met the then Heavy Industries Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and expressed our interest.
After Praful Patel took over, we again wrote a mail to them. But so far we have not got any reply as probably they were busy with this decision of disinvestment”.
He said if his company emerges as the acquirer, the acquisition will be funded through internal accruals and debt.
“At present we have a cash reserve of about Rs 25 crore. We have been already approached by many private equity firms,” Kedia said, adding, Atul Auto is expecting a revenue of Rs 190 crore for 2010-11 that will be declared in the next few weeks.
“We intend to invest in Scooters India’s technology and expand capacity. We have similar products,” Kedia said, adding, Atul Auto is the best candidate for Scooters India.
“Scooters India makes front-engine vehicles and we are are also into front-engine vehicles. So, we think it will be a a good combination,” he said.
Meanwhile, M&M said it will evaluate the possibilities of acquiring a stake in SIL.
“We will examine the opportunity and decide whether to approach the government. We will look to give any update in about 45 days,” a M&M spokesperson said.
The official, however, declined to share any further detail on this issue. Another three-wheeler maker Piaggio, which was earlier said to have been interested for a pie in SIL, said it is staying away from acquiring the troubled company.
“It (SIL) never appealed to us. We have our own facility at Baramati and are concentrating on it,” Piaggio Vehicles Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Chopra said.
Earlier in the day, the government, which holds 95.38 per cent in SIL as on December 31 last year, announced its decision to divest the entire stake in the firm with an aim to revive the company that has been incurring losses since 2002-03.
The selling of stake will be done through the Department of Disinvestment. The government will seek approval of the Parliament to get the authority to identify and induct a strategic partner.
Besides, the cabinet also gave approval for continued extension of salary support and clearing of balance sheet.
In March, 2009 the company was declared sick and went to the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE). As on 2009-10 it had a net loss of Rs 22.03 crore.
Incorporated in 1972, SIL started commercial production of scooters under the brand name of Vijai Super for domestic market and Lambretta for overseas market.
Later it ventured into three-wheelers with the Vikram brand. However, in 1997 it stopped two-wheeler production and has been into manufacturing and marketing of three-wheelers.

Katrina on a RE Classic 500
I am a great admirer of Royal Enfield bikes myself. The Classic 500, I would say is the best among the entire lot which came from RE’s stable. Now, what is Classic 500 associated with? Hmmm, masculine looks, power, uniqueness, what else. All that a man deserves?
I’ve got an image to prove you the fact that a beauty can make a masculine looking bike go sexy. We have seen Arnold riding Harley Davidson, Jason Statham riding a Ducati and the list goes on. But, ever thought of Katrina Kaif riding a Royal Enfield, that too a Classic 500? Here is the image of what I have been referring to.
Katrina’s upcoming movie, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara‘ boasts a scene where Katrina cruises along the highways of Spain in her RE Classic 500. A very different try for the RE company in terms of brand placement. For a guy like me who is a big time fan of not only Kat but also Classic 500, this is a double topping ice-cream. What more would I say?
Now, dear readers next time when you are all set to book a Classic 500 model, what would guide you. RE website or the CD of zindagi na Milegi Dobara?
Regards,
M.Naren.
